  2. Day 2 From Litochoro through Enipeas gorge to Prionia

We start off our ascent to the mountain of the gods from almost zero. Our today’s walk will take us along the very impressive Enipeas gorge! We start just outside Litochoro, at 300m. It is an amazingly beautiful place to cross, drowned in greenery, with Enipeas stream running alongside with us. On the way, we stop by one of the numerous crystal clear pools, where we have our light snack hot drink and cookies. Our guides will introduce you to the very interesting and unique in many cases flora of Mt. Olympus! We are at the very heart of the lower part of the mountain. We end up at Prionia location at 1100m, where we have our lunch before we return by road to the nearby Stavros refuge for your accommodation. For more about the gorge and the area, here.

Altitude covered, 800m. Approximate net walking time, 6.00’ – 6.30’ hours, easy / moderate.

  3. Day 3 From Prionia to Spilios Agapitos

After breakfast, without rush, we are transferred by road back to the Prionia location and parking space at 1100m, where we start off our today’s walk continuing our ascent to the mountain. A stunningly beautiful place, dominated by impressive rock faces and enormous mountain pine trees. A well paved path in a very rich pine and birch tree forest will take us up to 2100m and the refuge A’ or ”Spilios Agapitos”. During the walk the guide / s will introduce you to the very special Mt. Olympus flora. After settling in at the refuge, we will have plenty of time to soak up the energy and atmosphere of this very special place, as the refuge is situated on a natural balcony with amazing views all around! We will also discuss all about the next day’s route, as we can see almost the full length of it high above our heads. Not map needed, it’s all there for real! After a good meal and rest, we spend the night here. Altitude covered, 1000m. Approximate net walking time, 3.00’ to 3.30’ hours, easy / moderate.

  4. Day 4 High altitude circle

Today’s trek will take us to some of the highest summits in Greece and the whole of the Balkans including Skolio (2911m), the second highest summit of the mountain, Mikro Skolio (2820m) and Agios Antonios (2880m). This is a unique trek and a high altitude circle around the main central, western and southern summits of Mt. Olympus, offering great views. A picnic lunch en route, will give you the opportunity to appreciate the impressive scenery and feel Olympus’s unique “atmosphere”. The today’s high altitude hiking circle closes at the Meadow of the Nine Muses(Muses’ Plateau) at 2650m – 2700m, reaching it via the impressive Zonaria traverse, enjoying great views all along the way!  You will indeed experience a very special place and atmosphere while being in the muses’ plateau. The north face of the Throne of Zeus, impressively dominates the place! Staying in a mountain refuge at such a place, greatly guaranties your chances of seeing an impressive sunrise over the Aegean Sea and Halkidiki at the other side of Thermaikos gulf.  Spend the night in one of the two refuges here. Altitude covered, 811m up and 150m down. Approximate net walking time, 7.00’ hours, moderate.

  5. Day 5 The highest summit day

Today is the highest summit day! An early start and 30’ easy walk takes us to the base / starting point of the ascent to Mytikas (2918m), via the ”Louki” route. From here, the ascent is not a walk nor a technical climb, but a very interesting scramble about 250m long to the top. While at the summit, the words are not enough to describe the feelings and the views! Someone has to experience it! We will return via the ”Kakoskala” route and a cleft path back to ”Zonaria”, the plateau and the refuge, where you will have ample time to relax prior to dinner. Altitude covered, 218m up and the same down. Approximate net walking / scrambling time 4.00’ to 4.30’ hours, mainly challenging walk / scramble.

After a good rest will have the chance to explore the nearby peaks of Toumba and Prophet Elias and enjoy a unique sunset from there. You will indeed experience a very special place and atmosphere while being in the muses’ plateau.

Altitude covered, 100m up and down twice if climbing the two main summits of the plateau Toumba and Prophet Elias. Approximate net walking time, 2.00’ hours, moderate / easy.

  6. Day 6 To the 'Throne of Zeus

After breakfast we set off to climb the rocky summit ”Throne of Zeus” (2909m), the third highest. Being under its impressive shadow for the past two days on the plateau, it unavoidably becomes like a ”must” to everyone. A similarly challenging scramble like the one to Mytikas the previous day, leads us to its summit of the ”Throne of Zeus”. Atop the Throne we enjoy a wonderful view of the plateau itself and Mytikas. We descend via the same route and return to the plateau after an overall of 2.30’ hours of challenging walk / scramble. Altitude covered, 209m up and the same down.

After lunch and a good rest at the plateau, it is time to start going down and leave this amazing and hospitable place. We descend via Lemos ridge and along the Petrostrouga route which is a particularly beautiful and interesting hike with a variety of terrain and wonderful views of the Aegean Sea in the distance far below, we reach the Petrostrouga refuge at 1920m where we spend the night. Altitude covered, 750m down. Approximate net walking time, 2.30’ hours moderate.
  7. Day 7 From Petrostrouga to the finish

After breakfast at the refuge, we head down the north slopes of the mountain in an impressive pine tree forest to the mountain refuge of “Koromilia” at 1000m. After a rest and a meal in Koromilia refuge, we continue down in very dense Mediterranean type forest on the right side of the Orlias canyon, with great view points of the canyon’s waterfalls, until we reach the hike’s finishing point at 300m and the start of the asphalt road, from where you will be taken to your accommodation. Altitude covered 1620m down. Approximate net walking time about 5.30’ hours, mainly moderate walk.

General information about the program

Things you should know.

Accommodation: Great care is taken in selecting appropriate accommodation for your holiday. Nights 1 & 7 are spent in a hotel or traditional pension in Litochoro or in the near by mountain village of Paleos Panteleimon, all being traditional and high quality types of Accommodation. Nights 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 are spent in fully equipped mountain refuges, offering the facilities of a typical alpine refuge (well cooked food, drinks, special arranged hot shower, e.c.t.).

Meals and meal plan: This trip is organized on a full board basis. On arrival day 1 as well as day 7, we all seat around the table for the welcome and farewell evening meals. Breakfastis included at your hotel accommodation and while on the mountain it is included in the price. Lunch pack is also provided by us,taking of course under consideration your nutrition preferences, for every day’s walk, along with coffee or tea and cookies. On days 2, 3, 4 & 5 you can sample, according to your preferences, the very good food at the mountain refuges.

Transport: Transfers will be in minibus, taking you from your accommodation to the starting point of the first day’s walk and on day 7 you will be transferred from Mt. Olympus to your accommodation in the area. Your excess luggage not needed on the mountain, will be kept / stored in your accommodation waiting for your return.

From the airport to your accommodation, in case you do not have your own or hired means of transport (rented vehicle), the best suggested way is the public transport (train or bus), as our area of activities and the accommodation establishments are very close to the main road and rail streams of transport on the eastern side of the country. The nearest airport is the Makedonia airport of Thessaloniki, less than 1.00’ hour by train or bus to Litohoro, being the starting point for the Mt. Olympus ascent and the first day’s accommodation place. The “Proastiakos” train runs almost every hour from Thessaloniki to the above destinations for less than 28.00€ return. From the airport you take the bus (number 78) to the main train or bus station in Thessaloniki. It takes 20’ to 30’ and costs €2 The buses also run in the same manner, although a bit more expensive than the train. They run from Thessaloniki central bus station and stop at the Rapsani train station on their way to the south. From either station you have arrived (Rapsani or N. Pori), we pick you up and take you to your accommodation, 15’ away by road.

If you land at “Eleftherios Venizelos” airport in Athens, the train seems to be again the best option. Only the journey in this case takes 4.15’ to 5.00’ hours, depending up on the train you are using. From the airport you take the metro or the Proastiakos train to the “Stathmos Larisis” (Larisa’s station) in Athens, from where you take the train to Larisa. In Larisa you take the “Proastiakos” train to Litohoro, from where we pick you up to take you to your accommodation in Litohoro. In special request, we can pick you up from the station in Larisa to transfer you to Litohoro, about 1.20′ hours by road.
