Tempi Valley activities with Olympos Trek

Thessalian Tempi.

Known and reffered as Tempi valley, or Thessalika Tempi (Thessalian Tempi). Historically, geomorphologically and aesthetically speaking, the valley is one of the most significant landmarks of the mainland Greece, having mainly the character of a large-scale canyon more than a valley. It has been created and carved by the water action during the draining of the huge Thessalian lake throughout the millenniums. Pinios river runs through it which along with the dramatic rock faces of both sides and the rich vegetation, offers a unique natural beauty.

The valley is the main and only in some cases natural passage from northern Greece (Makedonia) to central (Thessalia) and southern country. Here was the first defense line against the Persians in the second Persian war, where united Greek forces gathered in an effort to stop Xerxes and his huge army at the narrowest and fortified passage of the gorge, with high possibilities of success. Xerxes, in order to avoid certain large-scale casualties and maybe a very probable defeat, bypassed the gorge, moving over the south parts of lower Olympus.

The polymorphous nature of the place along with its exceptional natural beauty, make the gorge another paradise for outdoor activities like canoeing, inflatable kayaking, rafting, rock climbing and aesthetic Via Cordata / Ferrata lines and hiking routes. The historical importance and strong cultural tradition of the area come along to complete the picture!
